In Bearing, the intense frustrations, heartache and joy of every day motherhood are candidly told through intimate, observational vignettes which offer a frank and raw account of the filmmaker’s life as a new mum over the first five years of her daughters life.
Bearing is a short film and accompanying photography series made as part of my doctoral research at UWE, Bristol. Exploring themes of identity, body and place, we see my daughter and I grow into our relationship of mother/daughter through the passage of time. The film questions the way women have to mother in our modern world where isolation is more common and women struggle ever more to balance career, home life, their own sense of self and mental wellbeing.
